AUSU Referendum

Levy to Support University Ombudsperson Position

Whereas an Ombudsperson position is found in universities across Canada; and

WHEREAS the current AUSU Ombudsperson only deals with issues pertaining to students; and

Whereas it has been recognized by both AUSU and Algoma University administration that an Algoma University Ombudsperson is a needed position to deal with issues within and between staff, faculty and students; and

Whereas an Ombudsperson Development Committee was established in the winter of 2009, made up of an equal number of staff and students, tasked with developing the position of Ombudsperson and hiring someone for the position to begin in August 2010; and

Whereas many, if not most, issues dealt with by the Ombudsperson will be student issues; and

Whereas to ensure fairness and equitable responsibility, the Ombudsperson position should be funded equally by Algoma University administration and by students (AUSU); therefore

Do you support a levy to be added to student fees in the amount of $3, a semester to fund a permanent Ombudsperson position at Algoma University that is equally responsible to students and administration?
